I agree that SU's traffic is of no long-term benefits, visiters come just for the sake of stumbling a maximum no. of sites. They hardly spend 6secs on your site.
Ha! People are so predictable.
This goes back to me being retarded about human nature. Naturally, I think I'm an idealist about human nature. I have no idea why, since it's not like I've had positive experiences with human nature that gave me a positive outlook.
But humans are really like robots. If the idea is for them to do something for a "noble" reason, forget it. If you give them a reward for something, then their function is to find and execute the easiest way to earn that reward.
You might try to encourage "noble" behavior with a reward. If you're StumbleUpon, and you like websites, and you like people to visit websites your site has linked, you might give them a reward for visiting sites. But if people can get the reward and yet cut out the noble part, they will. So, people will visit lots of sites to get "stumbles" (I don't know what those are, but I'll bet it's just a number next to their user name) but they won't stay longer than 6 seconds.
And in sports, people will take steroids, and in business, Enron and Madoff will pull their accounting tricks...
