My mother would close her eyes, wave her hands around, and say, "Peace!" over and over again.

My mother's favorite phrase was, "Go brush your teeth". If you needed to talk to her about anything and she didn't care to hear it, she'd say, "Go brush your teeth!" Or if she was feeling particularly clever, she'd just make the motion of brushing her teeth in front of her face.

Nobody but the filthy rich has money for college. You really need to get student loans. I was never told they existed. Both my school and my parents insisted there was no way I could go to college unless I won a scholarship (which I couldn't because I wasn't into sports). Both purposefully kept that information from me (the school because they felt I was worthless white trash and my parents because they feared me gaining independence).

I don't think I was interested in any particular career when I was a child. I had the vague idea that I wanted to be involved with computers, but nothing more specific than that.

In all of my years of school, I have never come to hate a phrase as much as, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Even today, I can't see or hear it somewhere without making my teeth grind. As if "growing up" is some instantaneous process and there's a certain point in time where you'll suddenly be "grown up" and can just pick and choose whatever you want to be.

It wouldn't have done any good. That guy was born with silver spoons in his mouth, ears, and asshole. He had absolutely no idea what it was like to not be able to just attain $20,000 from your parents or your bank account for whatever you want. You don't just "take $20,000 and start a business", there are other steps involved. Even if I had $20,000, it's not like "Bam!, now I've got a Convenience Store!"

He's probably retired if not dead by...

I think you're supposed to get a loan from a bank, but what I'm skeptical of is that you can start even a small business with "only" $20,000.

And no bank is going to give a kid right out of college a loan for that...

There probably aren't many. It occurs to me that you might be able to get a decent DVD library started for $20,000, so maybe you could open a rental place. But now those are on their way out, you would have had to have competed with big places like Blockbuster, and you not only needed the DVDs, you'd also need to lease a building and who knows whatever other expenses.

I have to wonder if becoming a parent automatically makes some people turn into complete assholes, or were they just that way to begin with.

My parents weren't drunks or physically abusive, but I still think there were really terrible parents. You couldn't talk to either of them about anything. BTW, as far as just "working at my own pace" and not worrying if they fire me goes...There's a problem with that. If I was fired, I wouldn't be able to put this place on a resume, which would leave a huge gap in my employment record (something, according to monster.com, companies frown on.) I haven't told them and I don't plan to. Trust me, I've been onto their conniving schemes for a few years now. Awhile ago, I was trying to explain a little about what I do with my website and they said, in a very excited voice, "Wow! You must make a lot of money doing that!" And I said, "Uh...no. I don't make anything. In fact, I put money out of my own pocket for some things". And then pretty much all the excitment and interest went out of their voices and they changed...

FO, I can't really do much to help, except just wish you good luck and hope that things eventually start looking up for you. However, I do want to offer one word of caution:

Something about your parents' interest in your job and how much money you're making sounds rather creepy to me. That, on top of them making you pay for their car and that time you said they called you about a month after you moved to Ohio to complain they couldn't make the payments on the house without you, is all...

Though I agree they bear some responsibility for everything, it's not going to do you any good to continue blaming them and yourself, FO. Your parents can't do anything to help you now, but they also can't do anything to cause you any more trouble, now that you're away from them.

You know, I think there might be such a thing as career counselors. Have you ever considered looking into something like that for help?

She was using the money I gave her for rent to make the car payments. But she still has no right to treat me that way. She quit her job so she could do volunteer work with wildlife. Saving wildlife is nice and all, but when you have kids, your first responsibility is to them.

Contrary to what the media wants you to believe, parents don't necessarily have to be drunks or deadbeats to be terrible parents.

But I've spent enough time complaining about them. They screwed up my life...

Damn! I just now read through this topic. I had no idea things had gotten THIS bad. I agree with James. Anyplace that doesn't allow you to take a full half-hour break and then steals your lunch money on top of that is not a place where I'd want to work.
